Fluorescence in certain minerals produce a unique and wonderful display of colors from the rock that may look as plain in daylight but wonderfull colors under ultraviolet radiation.  About 95% of all fluorescent minerals respond to shortwave ultraviolet light and only about 1o% to longwave "blacklight" UV light. Some minerals will respond to both or even midwave UV and display different colors under each wavelength. Collecting fluorescent minerals can be a  very rewarding hobby for oneself or their family and friends.
